JCDecaux picks Asiaray as agent

HONG KONG: Asiaray has been appointed by JCDecaux Pearl & Dean to act as the China sales agent for the territory's Mass Transit Railway and Chek Lap Kok Airport advertising media.

The appointment paves the way for Asiaray - one of the biggest airport advertising agencies in China - to expand into Hong Kong.

The company hopes to eventually have a 20 per cent share of the Hong Kong market.

Asiaray managing director, Vincent Lam, said the new business alliance would bring mutual benefit to both parties.

He also said that the MTR medium was a major one in the territory, because of the large number of commuters who use the sprawling transit system every day.

This point, he noted, was underlined by the fact that the MTR accounts for a 50 per cent share of Hong Kong's outdoor medium.

Lam added that the appointment came at a crucial time in China's economic development.

"While foreign companies are gearing up for China in the wake of the country's membership in the WTO, an increasing number of mainland companies are getting ready to 'enter the world'. The first step would be to try Hong Kong with which they share a similar culture.

"We expect a lot more Chinese FMCG and pharmaceutical brands to advertise in Hong Kong. Moreover, there are more mainland companies considering listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, and we believe that MTR and airport advertising can help to promote their corporate image," said Lam.
