Industry needs to improve ROI: Kaplan

HONG KONG - Andy Kaplan, president of international networks for Sony Pictures Television International, has admitted the industry needs to drastically improve the return on investment in new media platforms in order to grow the channel.

Kaplan, who oversees the company’s cable and satellite television networks and investments, said: “Revenues in the area of non-traditional media are still low. We have to invest in the real-estate, that’s the potential for growth.” Kaplan noted that content providers needed to amortise their costs over multiple geographic territories and technology platforms.

“Many broadcasters are still afraid of canabilisation, in the sense that if they show their content on anything other than TV screens they will suffer. But the idea that technology is a myth. We need to amortise costs, reach more eyeballs and grow the pie.”
