Indonesia red-tape delays tourism review

JAKARTA - The Indonesian Government has delayed its creative pitch for a campaign to mark the forthcoming "Visit Indonesia" year.

Three government departments, including the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, have become involved in the review, which is believed to have slowed the process down.

A number of multinational agencies, including Ogilvy & Mather, Lowe, Saatchi & Saatchi and Publicis, have declined to pitch for the business, which is expected to be fought out among local shops. No date has yet been set for a re-start of the process.

The review was called earlier this summer (Media, 25 July). Ten agencies were invited to answer a brief to create a campaign and logos to celebrate "Visit Indonesia" year. Indonesia lags neighbours Malaysia and Singapore in terms of visitor numbers. Malaysia is expected to see 28 million visitors this year, and Singapore 10.3 million, while Indonesia will welcome just five million.
