India to support private sector in meeting projects

NEW DELHI The Ministry of Tourism in India plans to establish a holding company to fund convention centres.

The government is gearing up for major expansion, including setting up two such venues ahead of the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in 2010. During the recent twoday meeting of Conventions India organised by the Indian Conventions Promotion Bureau (ICPB), Tourism Secretary A K Misra said the government would provide financial support for suitable projects. Recently, the ministry announced that assistance to the tune of US$6.8 million will be provided to the private sector, for investment in projects such as tourist trains, cruise terminals, convention centres and golf courses.
