Icon builds its offer in Singapore

Australian firm Icon has taken its Singapore expansion plans one step further, securing Boeing's local PR retainer and appointing ex-Edelman boss Sharolyn Choy as director to provide senior counsel to clients.

The agency displaced incumbent Ogilvy PR as Boeing's AOR, following a review process that also included GolinHarris and MDK PR.

Icon, which entered Singapore in June this year, is looking to build on its core business with flagship client and disaster management specialist Kenyon, and is touting an offering that features strong airline and crisis credentials. In particular, managing director John Bailey was previously based in Geneva for IATA, where he headed the organisation's crisis communications capabilities, a practice that has since been sold off to Kenyon.

"There's a number of things that make us a little different, including our aviation and aerospace business," explained Bailey. "That's not to say we are going to position ourselves as a niche agency. We have global and Singapore experience and we are used to working regionally and internationally." For her part, Choy joins the firm after a six-month sabbatical following the closure of her 10-year career with Edelman (Media, February 25). "This gives me a good opportunity to contribute to the business here," said Choy. "I will provide senior counsel for the business and a few of the select clients." Icon Singapore's equity is split between Bailey, ex-Edelman Asia-Pacific president Jerry Hendin and Icon Australia.
