HONG KONG The Hong Kong Tourist Board (HKTB) has released 2001 conference, exhibition and incentive (CEI) delegate statistics, which show a drop in the number of events but a rise in visiting delegates. The figures do not include meetings and events attended by Hong Kong delegates only. The criteria used to count conventions is one with a minimum of ten overseas participants. For exhibitions, 10% of overall attendance must be overseas participants and for large exhibitions with less than 10% overseas participants, at least 500 must be from overseas. Hong Kong is banking on the following four factors to sustain and improve its CEI business: o The relationship the Hong Kong Special Administration Region has with mainland China, both as a physical gateway and one where one can develop relationships in an environment conducive to business. o Safety. o Quality infrastructure. o A wide range of activities and attractions, which are easily accessible to those with busy schedules. In 2001, companies from short-haul markets accounted for the majority of corporate events, and many were direct sales or insurance companies. Recent booking trends are showing group sizes becoming smaller, between 30 and 50 participants being the average for corporate events, as well as shorter booking lead times.
