Hong Kong pulls in aviaton show from Singapore base

HONG KONG Hong Kong's exhibition sector is celebrating a major coup by winning the right to host a pivotal aviation show that has been held in Singapore for the past 25 years.

Asian Aerospace International Expo and Congress will be held at AsiaWorld-Expo in September 2007. Organiser Reed Exhibitions announced the change last month. The move comes after its former partner, Singapore Technologies Engineering, announced its support for a rival event, the Singapore Airshow, headed by Singaporean trade show veteran Jimmy Lau. The Hong Kong event will be open to trade only to allow buyers and sellers to focus on business without the general public. Explaining the choice of Hong Kong, Clive Richardson, senior vice president of Reed Exhibitions aerospace and defence group, said: "Hong Kong is not only the perfect gateway to the Chinese market, it is a highly connected aviation hub with direct access to other large emerging markets like India, Thailand and the Middle East." Martin Craig, president of Aerospace Forum Asia, said the key advantage was Hong Kong's proximity to the huge mainland Chinese aviation market. The last edition of Asian Aerospace in Singapore was held on February 21 to 26 this year at Changi Exhibition Centre. The stakes for both the Hong Kong and Singapore shows are huge. Asian Aerospace 2006 reported business deals of US$15 billion concluded during the show, more than four times the 2004 total.
