HK adspend jumps 17% in first half

HONG KONG - Advertisers in Hong Kong spent HK$12 billion (US$1.5 billion) in the first half of 2008, a 17.3% increase year on year, according to Admango.

Banking, pharmaceuticals and toiletries remain the top three industries for adspend, the same as in Admango’s last adspend report. The banking sector saw a 46% year-on-year jump in spend to HK$1.3 billion (US$166 million), following a flurry of advertising campaigns for credit cards and personal loans.

The report showed that HSBC has taken over from PCCW as the top advertiser. Hang Seng Bank and Bank of China are also among the top 10.

TV and newspapers still capture more than half of the media revenue combined, making up 35.7% and 31.8%, respectively. Interactive jumped 28.3% to HK$385 million (US$49.3 million) Out-of-home wall signage also stood out, with a 58.9% increase in adspend to HK188 million (US$24 million).
