Guangdong Satellite Television (GST) has been formally granted the
right to rebroadcast its signals via Beijing cable TV networks.
The latest coup, following successful negotiations GST has had with
Beijing Radio and Television Bureau and Beijing TV Station, will give
the southern China broadcaster access to the audience in the Chinese
capital.
Provincial satellite TV channels, originally conceived as a way of
reaching remote audiences, have emerged as strong contenders in
challenging national broadcaster CCTV's advertising clout.
The provincial stations have been lobbying hard for the right to "land"
in major cities; many have succeeded through reciprocal agreements
between cable TV stations. Private satellite ownership is not
permitted.
Guangdong Satellite Channel is being rebroadcast in cable TV networks in
1,210 large and medium-sized cities across the country, including
Chongqing, Hunan and Liaoning. Beijing is a highly-prized addition to
the list as the capital's affluent audience is sought after by
advertisers.
Guangdong Satellite Channel is also rebroadcast in 20 cities in other
countries including the US, and Japan.
