Gartshore closes advertising business

SINGAPORE - Local independent agency Gartshore & Associates, run by ex-Batey account director Bill Gartshore, is scaling back its business to focus on publishing.

The company, which at its peak was staffed by 16, is now three people. It will outsource most of the advertising work it continues to do for long-held clients such as Hour Glass.

"Running an advertising agency has never been easy in Singapore. Now that media agencies have taken away our main source of income it has become even more difficult," said Bill Gartshore, the company managing director. "We will now use our skills in the book publishing world."

He added: "A lot of smaller agencies in Singapore are slogging their guts out just to pay the rent. It's a pity. No wonder a lot of young people are choosing alternative careers."

The publishing side of Gartshore's business, called Gartbooks, counts An Essential Guide to Singlish as its most notable publication to date.
