What’s new in iOS 4.3 for iPhone and iPad?

There are three new gestures for iPad in the OS update, all using four or five fingers (it doesn’t matter which). First is the anticipated pinch to return to the home screen. Second is the upwards swipe to reveal the app bar (that would normally appear with a double-hit on the home button. And third is the sideways swipe that transitions between open apps. Nice. Microsoft Internet Explorer 9 incoming

Out with the old, in with the new. Days after announcing it was reading the last rites to IE6, Microsoft has confirmed it will release Internet Explorer 9 on 14 March. The beta version's available now if you want to get a head start.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 gets ready to roll

Samsung has started teasing its 22 March tablet announcement, the second Samsung Unpacked event this year.

The cryptic ‘78910’ code isn’t too hard to break (think 7in-8.9in-10in) and implies the announcement of the rumoured Galaxy Tab 8.9, joining the original 7inch Tab and the Galaxy Tab 10.1, announced in February at Mobile World Congress.

The new mid-sized slab of gadgety goodness is expected to run Google Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) which is no big surprise; anything less after the iPad 2 release would be techno-suicide. 

Opera launches online app store

Opera has announced a mobile store to rule them all, dishing out apps for all the big players including Symbian, Windows Mobile, Palm, Android and Blackberry OS. Apple is notably absent from the list, but fear not as plans to embrace the Apple App Store are in motion.

The ambitious project hopes to demolish single platform app stores and open up millions of potential Opera users to developers worldwide. The store can be accessed via Opera’s mobile and mini browsers and automatically detects your OS so you can jump straight in and prod away. Read more...

iPhone 5 rumoured to wear metal

If you’ve been overindulging on all of the iPad 2 news, perhaps a wafer thin iPhone 5 rumour will help ease the bloated feeling.

Whispers from a source in China are pointing towards a re-embracing of aluminum and the ditching of glass for the next version of the phone that changed everything. Evolution is a must for enduring in the feral wilderness of super-phones and magical tablets and former typewriter manufacturer Olivetti is mutating accordingly, in a tablet-driven attempt for survival.

The 10inch, Android-infused OliPad is powered by an dual-core A9 processor, as well as boasting all important USB and HDMI ports and an SD card slot; tempting features indeed, especially when stacked up against certain other tablets. Read more...
