FT.com appoints Shrimsley managing editor

LONDON - The Financial Times has appointed news editor Robert Shrimsley (pictured) as managing editor of FT.com as part of its strategy to emphasise its online content.

He replaces James Montgomery, who held the position for the past two years and will be “exploring several options in print and online at the FT for the future,” the company said in a release.

European-edition editor John Thornhill has been named news editor to fill Shrimsley’s vacated role, which he held for three years.

According to The Financial Times, Shrimsley will oversee FT.com’s digital-and-print integration and manage the site’s ongoing design renovations and content. He will work closely with FT.com’s managing director Rob Grimshaw.

The company also announced that FT.com has attracted more than one million registered users following a year of innovations introduced to the site paired with heightened reader interest amid the current financial climate.

Among the FT.com’s recent implementations was the adoption of a partial subscription model in late 2007, which allows readers to access some content for free and some FT.com-specific and analytical products for a fee.
