FT and Time edge rivals at SOPA

The Financial Times and Time Asia were the big regional winners at this year's awards for editorial excellence held by SOPA, the Society of Publishers in Asia, in which print publications competed directly against online and wire services for the first time. <BR><BR> The Financial Times picked up five awards and one honourable mention, including the award for Excellence in Newspaper Design, pipping rival Wall Street Journal Asia, which received an hounourable mention for its new compact layout. Time Asia, meanwhile, picked up four awards and seven honourable mentions. <BR><BR> In the English language local newspaper and small magazine category, Hong Kong's SCMP Group scooped nine awards, the most of the evening, for its daily and Sunday papers. <BR><BR> The Ming Pao Group similarly dominated the Chinese language category, picking up six awards for Ming Pao and Ming Pao Weekly, as well as one award for Yazhou Zhoukan, the newsweekly it jointly owns with Tom Group.
