Ford links salute for diving stars to tour sponsorship

Ford has saluted China's Olympic diving team, who returned home with a clutch of gold medals, with a congratulatory print ad that ran in the mainland's first tier cities.

J. Walter Thompson's director in charge of Ford, Danielle Godbier, said the ad leveraged the car maker's sponsorship of the Champions Diving Tour, which features several of the Olympic winners such as diving's "golden couple" Tian Liang and Guo Jing Jing. Chinese divers compete against Australia in the tour, which is held three times a year in Zhuhai, Shanghai and Guangzhou. According to Godbier, Ford's sponsorship of the tour will run until the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008. Along with images of China's dive stars, the ad features Ford's joint-venture Modeo, Fiesta and Maverick brands.
