Entries for Cannes Lions down 20 per cent

GLOBAL - Organisers of the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival have revealed a 20 per cent drop in entry figures for the 2009 event.

The Cyber Lion awards saw a 20 per cent fall in entries, while submissions in the press, film and outdoor categories dropped 32, 25 and 23 per cent drops, respectively, from the previous year.

The 56th advertising festival, touted as the largest gathering of worldwide industry professionals, garnered 22,652 total entries from 86 countries, a drop of 5,632 from the 2008 event.

Of the 11 categories available for submission, only the Design and Promo Lions saw an increase from 2008, and those avenues grew by a margin of less than two per cent.

"Although there are naturally fewer entries across the categories, the Lions remain the ultimate global awards to win with more than 22,600 entries from 86 countries competing, and we look forward to the 11 juries arriving in Cannes to honour the finest creative work the world's communications industry has to offer,” said the festival’s CEO Philip Thomas in a release. “We are particularly happy about the launch of the PR Lions, which have been so well supported by our colleagues in the PR industry. With 431 entries from 239 companies in 48 countries participating, it's a great welcome to Cannes for this new category.”

The festival will be held 21 to the 27 of June in Cannes, France.
