Elle hits 10 by getting closer to readership

SINGAPORE: Women's fashion monthly Elle Singapore has lined up a range of activities to further strengthen its relationship with readers as the magazine marks its 10th anniversary.

The 222-page March anniversary issue features MediaCorp actress Sharon Au as its cover girl. In a first for the title, Au also made an appearance at an autograph signing session at the Borders bookstore.

The March issue also includes a competition offering a 10-day luxury trip for two to France as a prize, an out-of-book supplement on international catwalk trends and a red book giveaway.

To further connect with its audience, the title invited 1,000 selected readers to join in the anniversary party at Centro on March 12, International Women's Day.

In raising its visibility, Elle also worked with Japanese bookstore Kinokuniya to do a wrap around the magazine shelves of its largest store in Singapore.

The title is also running an animation-based campaign at distribution kiosks around the city.

Elle Singapore was originally published by ACP, the publisher of Cleo and Harper's Bazaar. In 2000, it was relaunched by Hachette MediaCorp, a 50-50 joint venture between Hachette Filipacchi Medias and the local media giant.

Said Alain Deroche, the international publishing director of Hachette-Filipacchi Asia-Pacific: "It is definitely a reason to celebrate. Elle Singapore has in the past few years gotten closer to its readers. We are now looking at higher circulation figures and increased subscriptions."

Elle Singapore publishes 40,000 copies for the Singapore market and 10,000 for the Malaysia market. According to the latest ACNielsen figures, it has a readership of 26,000. The market leader is Her World, which has a readership of 141,000.

In addressing the sizeable gap between the two titles, Elle said it was not a mass title but an upscale women's magazine. Citing figures from its second gobal readership survey in 2003, Elle noted that more than 85 per cent of its readers are PMEBs (professionals, managers, executives and businessmen) aged between 25 and 34.
