Edelman names regional public affairs chairman

HONG KONG - Edelman has appointed Franklin Lavin (pictured), a former US Ambassador to Singapore, as chairman of its regional public affairs practice.

According to a statement from the agency, the move was prompted by a changing relationship between business and governments in Asia-Pacific. Lavin is expected to work to build trust and understanding between the two sectors.

“In the current environment, businesses and governments must work together to help economies recover and thrive,” said Alan Vandermolen, Edelman’s Asia-Pacific president. “Frank’s combination of senior business and senior government experience makes him uniquely qualified to advise our current and prospective clients in this space.”

A recent study by Edelman indicated that 65 per cent of regional opinion leaders believe that private businesses should work in partnership with governments to improve decision-making and strategic processes. Over two-thirds of those surveyed called for more stringent government regulation across all industries in the region.

“Building and enhancing the relationship between government and business has never been more important,” added Vandermolen.

In addition to his diplomatic experience, Lavin has also served as under-secretary for international trade at the US Department of Commerce, and held senior regional positions at Citibank, Bank of America and Cushman & Wakefield Investors.
