Economist debuts mobile TV adverts

HONG KONG - The Economist has become the first advertiser to sign up with SmarTone-Vodafone's new FoneTV service, developing a 15-second spot which will run across BBC World's regular pay-TV platform in conjunction with the mobile operator's News Channels platform on mobile.

The copy-led TVC, which was developed by OgilvyOne Hong Kong, focuses on The Economist’s special India and China technology special report, and is expected to be viewed across BBC World on mobile, along with CNN and CNBC among others.

Part of the marketing deal between The Economist and SmarTone-Vodafone will see the global news and current affairs title sponsor the first month of FoneTV subscriptions for news channels, valued at HK$18 (US$2) per subscriber.

OgilvyOne Hong Kong  managing director Sean Rach said: “We’re not sure we can claim a world first, but we can claim a Hong Kong first.”
