eBay to acquire Gmarket

SEOUL - eBay has announced its plans to acquire South Korea's leading auction website Gmarket for US$1.2 billion in an effort to bolster its presence in the region.

Gmarket claims 18 million registered users in the market and directly competes with website Internet Auction, which eBay purchased in 2001.

According to global reports, the purchase would give eBay 37 per cent of South Korea’s e-commerce market.

The deal is expected to be finalised in the second quarter of this year.

The move comes two days after the US-based eBay announced its intentions to spin off online calling company Skype through a public offering in 2010.
