Drama series are the most popular television programmes on local
Chinese channels in Hong Kong, while movies and documentaries dominated
the most-watched programmes ranking on the English-language services of
TVB and ATV.
According to data provided by ACNielsen Media International, 1.4 million
viewers tuned into Hong Kong Cable TV during the first week of this
year, with the movie channel topping the most-watched station on both
weekdays and weekends.
CNBC attracted 116,000 viewers in the high-income bracket (monthly
household income of more than HKdollars 30,000), while 109,000
top-occupation professionals tuned into Discovery Channel.
Star TV attracted an audience reach of 512,000 viewers for the same
period.
Hong Kong TV ratings were released for the first time this year as part
of Nielsen's new service, which also saw the expansion of the TV ratings
home panel from 325 to 600 homes at the beginning of this year.
ATV and TVB both renewed five-year contracts to the ratings service,
while CNBC and Discovery became the first regional subscribers.
"The new data allows us to see for the first time, how niche channels of
cable and satellite are performing," said Mediacom director of media
research and strategic planning Adrian King.
"The advertising industry now has access to accurate viewing habits of
niche channels, which gives us a greater understanding of target markets
for certain products."
