Downturn hits Chinese digital growth

BEIJING - China's online advertising revenues totaled more than Rmb 3 billion (US$440 million) in the first quarter of 2009 - nearly six per cent up from the same period in 2008 but flat compared with the year's fourth quarter, the Data Center of the Chinese Internet announced.

According to the Center’s Survey of Chinese Internet Marketing, advertising revenues spiked 5.9 per cent from the first quarter of 2008, from Rmb 2.86 billion.

The agency noted that growth was stymied between the fourth quarter of 2008 and the first three months of 2009 because of the economic downturn and budget cuts by advertisers. Participants in the poll also said that the business of blocking advertisements and limited guidelines for advertising online were among the factors of the slowdown.
