DIARY: Stories we could tell ... Olympic hope boasts advertising link

It was certainly a moment to uncork the bubbly when news reached Diary's desk that Hong Kong would be participating in the upcoming Winter Olympics for the first time.

Asia's World City, where it swelters rather than snows, has finally found accomplished athletes to fly its flag in a winter sports competition.

But there's much more to this story. It has an advertising angle, which has nothing to do with the obscenely expensive sponsorship deals that the Olympic organisers have struck.

Check out the smile - and when you have a chance to see her skate - the competitive spirit of Christy Ren, who will be participating in the track speed skating events.

You may just spot a similarity out there in Hong Kong's advertising community.

Actually, the tip-off came from a story about Ren in the Boston Globe, which simply said her mother was in advertising. Perhaps what it should have said is that mummy manages a sprawling China operation for a US communications network.

The Tufts University freshman is none other than the daughter of advertising dynamo Viveca Chan, who heads Grey's China operations. Although Diary believes Chan is far more comfortable in a boardroom stuck in the middle of a pitch than on a piste.
