DIARY: Stories we could tell ... Multari exits with a puff and Fat Betty

Many of you in Hong Kong will probably recognise the partially-hidden face as M&C Saatchi's group account director Rick Multari (and sadly, some of you may even be familiar with his plastic companion). But, what could have possessed Multari to share his passion with the rest of adland?

Has Multari, who recently left M&C, given up advertising to go sell sex toys for Fetish Fashion? Before we do any further damage to the reputations of Multari or the polythene friend he's huffing and puffing to bring speedily to life, here's the real deal: Multari has a reputation for - how should we politely put it - blowing a lot of air.

What better way to drive the point home than to present him with an inflatable friend at his leaving do as he heads off to join Ogilvy & Mather.

M&C Saatchi, managing director, Janice Chan - who has worked with Multari for the last two years - sums up the man: "Multari goes to great lengths to explain his point of view.He has a very long-winded way of explaining things. When he gives presentations, we know to ask him early on to keep it short."

The agency decided 'Fat Betty' would be the only farewell gift befitting a man of Multari's expansive lung capacity.

Multari good-humouredly went along with the gag and proceeded to blow up Betty.

True to his reputation, he filled the doll will hot air within three seconds. As much as we want to show the rest of the party shots, we think it's best to rely on a sanitised description.

Why? "He has a really wide and hairy chest, and the girls wanted him to take it (his clothes) off," says Chan. Multari obliged (and Diary can confirm, after seeing the pictures, he is indeed wide and hairy).

But perhaps a note of warning to Multari's new employer from M&C's Chan: "If Ogilvy thinks they are getting Media's Suit of the Year or a really reputable man, then hey, they should look again at these pictures!"
