DIARY: Stories we could tell ... HK commuters vow to silence buses

Silence seekers in the SAR are on a major recruitment drive to launch an all-out assault on bus advertising. Over the past few months, an entire movement dedicated to fighting "annoyance broadcasting has cropped up in the city.

Complete with its own website at www.hush-the-bus.com, the movement is supported by a 200-strong troop of concerned residents who are taking matters into their own hands.

The infuriated group has even turned its wrath on advertisers. Its website now features an online poll where angry commuters have the opportunity to vote for the "most annoying ad seen on buses.

But Diary warns that tempers are again likely to flair as the city enters its next phase of "bus evolution". Sources say a local bus company will shortly begin testing a new interactive system which uses a sensory device on buses and on the street. In theory, when a bus hits a transmitter signal, it will trigger an ad on the TV screens on buses. So, if McDonald's is around the corner, commuters will hear a blitz of sales promos until, of course, the bus turns another corner.

While the Hush-the-bus group isn't likely to welcome that one with open arms, Diary wonders if it may be silenced by the bus company's plans to provide internet access on buses, and news via TV screens at its bus stops.
