DIARY: Stories we could tell ... Austin's amazing flab-to-fitness tale

From the rotund to the slim. In our last issue of 2001, Diary fittingly featured a gutsy Jonathan Kenny, who apparently started his Christmas binge a few months before everyone else.

This issue, Diary's sights have fallen on Mark Austin - the Singapore-based chief executive officer of Tempus Asia-Pacific - and with very good reason.

Unlike the Kenny tale, this is a remarkable flab-to-fitness story. Just a year ago, Austin was reportedly nudging 250 pounds, maybe even more than that, highly reliable industry sources have told Diary. These days, he's boasting a remarkably svelte form. He's at least 50 pounds lighter and looking ready to run a marathon.

So what's behind this amazing girth reduction. No-one knows when the turning point came but close associates say it was a yearning to live a more healthy lifestyle. How anyone can do so in this industry is a mystery, but Austin appears to have cracked the code by sheer willpower. In fact, he's been so successful that Diary hears fitness clubs around Asia are looking to hire him as a talent in their advertising campaigns. The only sticking point, Austin apparently wants to be more than just a pretty face - he'll probably want to head up the strategy meetings - and that's when the coffee and donuts could prove his undoing.
