Diary: Stories we could tell... Absolut shame awards ignore hunk

At the risk of promoting gender warfare, Diary feels compelled to turn its not inconsiderable spotlight onto a most 'refreshing' ad for Absolut Vodka.

The 'Absolut Hunk' certainly seems happy to see us, or perhaps that's just a vodka bottle in his pocket.

Still, credit must go where it is due, for many of Diary's female associates are shocked that work of such remarkable strategic insight was criminally overlooked at the recent round of advertising awards.

As one satisfied viewer pronounced: "Well, you know I could never resist alcohol."

If nothing else, the ad certainly demonstrates a compelling understanding of its target market, which Diary attributes to its 'strong visual identity'.

In the interests of research, Diary spent some time unearthing the story behind the ad, which is derived from an episode of, what else, Sex and the City.

In the plot line, Samantha arranges for her love interest, played by Jason Lewis, to feature in the said ad for Absolut Vodka.

The Absolut Hunk campaign becomes wildly popular, featuring in an impressive display on Times Square, and prompts the creation of a new cocktail, which is now a real life drink phenomenon, slurped by Jimmy Choo-wearing fashionistas across trendy Manhattan.

Absolut paid out no money for this savvy bit of product placement, and sources confirm that the ad, which was created by TBWA/Chiat Day creative director Patrick O'Neill, was "digitally altered to prevent a more graphic image behind the bottle."

Then again, perhaps Diary should be unsurprised by such shameless pandering to the baser instincts.

After all, as J. Walter Thompson recently confirmed, the tagline of its Shanghai Mobile campaign will read: 'Let your satisfaction rise.' Which certainly brings a whole new dimension to MMS picture messaging.

Bewildering though this particular tagline may be, Diary will assume that it is simply a case something being lost in the translation from Chinese to English.

Otherwise JWT might consider signing up the Absolut Hunk for the'upcoming' campaign.
