DIARY: Smiley Simon is first entry in Woodward's bar-naming contest

Never let it be said that this magazine never gives back to the industry - although this attempt at largesse might be a convoluted way of doing so.

But it's all for a good cause, helping a former media man who's brave enough to throw caution to the wind and jump industries to carve a new course for himself.

In Diary's last entry, we mentioned that Carat Shanghai broadcast specialist Simon Woodward was jumping out of China's shark-eat-shark world of media to open a bar as well as spin discs as a DJ. That's just half the story - apparently plans are in place to open the bar, which will have a Jamaican/Sichuan theme in Shanghai. Now the only connection Diary can see in the two is the fiery chilli pepper that figures prominently in both cuisines. Having come up with this unusual - read that to mean schizophrenic - juxtaposition, Woodward is at a loss for a name. Ever one to support budding entrepreneurs, Diary will offer a first-rate bottle to who ever can come up with a name that lives up to Woodward's concoction. MindShare's China chief Chris Walton has already thrown one entry in the ring: "Given how glum he always looks in his bloody photos, how about Smiley Simon?

Walton suggests.

Surely an industry as creative as ours should be able to line up a name or two to catch Woodward's fancy.
