DIARY: Rant

I couldn't help but stifle a belly chuckle when I saw the latest bit of self-promotion the wonderful people at Hong Kong TV station, TVB, have started running.

Can't really remember the gory details, but the plug goes something like this - TVB Pearl second only to Jade for weekend viewing.

For those of you lucky enough not to be acquainted with Hong Kong's broadcasting powerhouse, Jade is the Chinese-language sister channel.

Now this brings to mind that old saying about coming up smelling like roses if you compare yourself to dogs.

Let's just say, TVB Pearl doesn't have much of a fight on its hands - if viewers think it's fare is lame, well the competition is positively crippled. Week in, week out we've get either cooking shows or endless hours of Macau racing. If it were at all possible, Hong Kong's English-language television viewing has actually gotten incredibly unpalatable - shows about horrible diseases, space exploration, whipping up dishes with the Naked Chef. You get the picture?

Which brings me to the real reason behind this rant. It isn't only TV that has forgotten that Hong Kong is supposedly Asia's world city - which means that it shouldn't ignore English-language fare.

But increasingly, marketers have chosen to neglect Hong Kong's English-language segment. Admittedly, we're few in numbers, but surely our spending belies our market size. So, if you're taking the liberty of annoying me with direct mailers, promotional SMS and what other one-to-one piece of communication that is now the fad, at least do so in a language I understand.

Otherwise, you've just wasted a whole lot of cash.
