DIARY: Rant

Isn't it sad that a group of people has banded together for a crusade aimed at ridding on-bus advertising in Hong Kong?

While I would agree with their motives, I think they've gone somewhat round the bend on this one because they even have a very sophisticated website to spearhead their fight against those small, flat TVs that can be found on most double-deckers and minibuses.

The site, www.hush-the-bus.com, features newsletters and articles that detail the blow-by-blow account of how the Government's Ombudsman is handling the complaints from the public against on-bus advertising.

There's a poll of which on-bus ad is most annoying (all of them, aren't they?) and a call to arms section, where people can send their complaints direct to bus companies or join events like Hush-the-Bus forums. They even have Hush-the-Bus stickers to give away.

Whoever put this site and campaign together went to a lot of time and trouble. They're geniuses and they haven't left a stone unturned in their planning.

However, one wonders if their ability and never-say-die, combat mentality could be put to better use.

I don't know what exactly. Maybe it could turn itself into something bigger, perhaps, an independent third party, public watchdog. The organisation which fights for the little guy.

The Hush-the-Bus campaign is a good start but it's just too small right now and I don't think it will go anywhere fast. It needs other issues to latch on to in order to grow and thrive.
