Television

I've been here three months, so I have to say I'm still enjoying the

thrill of the novel (and, sometimes, the bizarre). Nothing better than

exploring the media of a country that's new to you.

Definitely "Freddie the Weather Cartoon" on Hong Kong Pearl channel.

Where did that come from?

Otherwise, I live in the only block in Hong Kong without cable or

satellite, so I'm a DVD man.

Press

The SCMP is hard to beat. "Choppings" sound so 'cartoon' - for an attack

with a meat cleaver - just like "bashings", the Australian word for

beating the living daylights out of someone.

The Spectator is also a big favourite - written and read by people who

speak like the Queen, and there's humour in that. Also, Spruce,

Wallpaper's new offering and proof that it is possible (though perhaps

not advisable) to launch a brand named after a softwood.

Websites

Mostly things you can't get, like Leo Burnett's online commercials

library or it's Knowledge Bank "Zeitgeist City".

But if pushed to give away my sources, Chinanow.com and WARC (the World

Advertising Research Centre).

Advertising

As a planner, I've been disappointed how few pieces of really resonant

work I've seen in Asia. Very little, for example, at the Hong Kong 4As

show. Our new work for Walkman in Malaysia is a welcome exception.

Radio

RTHK - if you're going to wake up at 7am, best do it quietly.
