DIARY: Did honking wrong address cost Ipsos its Asia headoffice?

Hearing about the demise of Ipsos' regional office in Hong Kong brought a tear to Diary's eyes, although there is some consolation in the fact that its biennial Asian Business Readership Survey will continue.

But the real tears came from Diary splitting its sides guffawing after stumbling onto what could be the real reason behind the closure of the Hong Kong operation.

This time round, the closure may not be entirely due to financial reasons because the company's Asia-Pacific operations bucked the overall downtrend last year.

Ipsos Far East more than doubled revenues in the first nine months of last year, although the return on investment could have been a lot higher.

Which led Diary to make a closer inspection of the company's website, www.ipsos.com, to sniff out if there were other factors that contributed to Ipsos shuttering its Hong Kong headquarters.

Apparently there is. Could it be that more than a few cheques, which might have tripled or even quadrupled earnings, were sent to the wrong location?

The website reveals that in the Asia-Pacific region, the Ipsos group has a presence in China, Australia and "Honk Hong".

Honk Hong? Isn't that a company in Bangkok specialising in rather dodgy night-time establishments.
