DIARY: Alien abduction and friendship a reality for Asian audiences

Not only could aliens be living among us right now, but Star Movies buffs also think they could recognise one - if they were ever handed the chance to have an extra-terrestrial tete a tete.

Unlikely? Sceptics among you, beware, as according to a recent poll conducted by Star as it launches the Steven Spielberg-produced sci-fi series Taken, viewers are getting in touch with their cosmic side to the extent that they believe the little blue people are running around the outer limits of the cosmos right now.

It would seem that the Taiwanese are the staunchest believers of all - with 98 per cent of respondents believing that life does exist elsewhere in the universe, and 79 per cent of them gunning for alien abduction as a likely occurrence. While Hong Kong and China viewers came almost neck and neck (94 per cent and 95 per cent respectively opened their minds to the alien reality concept), Singaporeans appear to be a more pragmatic lot, with a sager 89 per cent expressing their belief in 'life out there'.

Only 51 per cent of Singaporeans think they could be abducted while out on that fateful shopping spree.

Touted by Star as a "movie event", the series is cleverly juxtaposing real-world historical events with the lives of three families across generations.

Move over Roswell; thanks for the memory Mulder; and so long Scully - it's time to be Taken.

Amazingly, the poll findings also support the fact that not everyone associates gangly, bug-eyed alien abductions with sinister surgical with procedures on humans. A staggering 70 per cent in China thought they were one step away from being downright furry - earnestly believing 'aliens are friendly' (hang on a minute, have we even established they exist?).

In Hong Kong, 56 per cent thought aliens come in peace, and a decidedly more cautious 40 per cent in Taiwan believed that the little green men could be here to do good. Crop-circle anyone?
