DESIGN CHOICE: Dymo - Simon Siu, Managing director, BGX

Some designs - such as the Polaroid and the Walkman - represent a certain point in the history of the modern consumer.

They are not just products, but they have grabbed our attention in such a way as to create a certain set of values in our minds.

Such is their impact that the product names themselves have become powerful brands.

Among such brands, I believe one name shouldn't be left out - DYMO.

I don't know the company that manufactured the DYMO, but the brand still stands as a powerful symbol of a certain decade. I'm afraid I am not old enough to tell you exactly when it was invented but let's look at its enduring appeal from the designer's point of view.

The DYMO produces a very distinctive typeface, one with a special character.

Just looking at what has been typed out will tell you that it was done so with a DYMO.

The DYMO has numerous functional benefits - it's portable, easy-to-operate and it's colourful. It is also self-adhesive, and cost effective.

Years after its launch, it remains a smart-looking tool that is still relevant today.

It does help that its name - four letters - and logo type sound and look just as fresh today.

Without a doubt, the DYMO is my design choice.
