DDB shifts regional HQ to Thai capital

BANGKOK: DDB Worldwide is shifting its Southeast Asia regional head office from Singapore to Thailand in a bid to boost its Bangkok operation, which will include the launch of a local Rapp Collins office within the next few months.

The move is part of efforts to raise the agency's clout in Thailand because of the country's growing economic prospects, as well as its proximity to the newly emerging Indo-China markets.

"We aim to boost Far East DDB's ranking in Thailand to a top-five agency from its current position of seventh in terms of billings, and a top-three place in terms of creativity, said Greg Taucher, DDB's president and chief executive officer for Southeast Asia.

The move will strengthen the agency's relationship with local partner Far East, with which DDB integrated its operations in 2000.

Thailand has become the second-largest market in Southeast Asia for DDB, behind Indonesia.

Staff changes are in the pipeline, however, only Taucher is relocating to Thailand, while the chief financial officer will continue to work from Singapore.

Taucher said his focus would be on winning new business as well as to maintain a high-level of service to existing clients, including Philips and Volkswagen.

Taucher is upbeat on the near-term future of Thailand's ad industry, as consumer confidence and spending is expected to increase.

The long-term outlook was harder to predict, he said.

"Everything that goes wrong in business today seems to be blamed on El Nino or September 11, so assuming we don't see any more calamities like that, then business should continue to improve."
