DDB axes staff in Hong Kong

HONG KONG - DDB regional chief John Zeigler has confirmed that 15 staff members have been laid off at its Hong Kong office, including head of business Richard Leong.

According Zeigler, staff members across account servicing, creative and admin were let go yesterday, leaving approximately 160 people in place - servicing a current client roster that includes Park n’ Shop, McDonald’s and ExxonMobil.

“It’s an agency that’s stuck in the mid-80s,” said a source, of DDB’s HK office.

“It’s very reliant on commissions and on TV and print. There’s a need to shift and focus on Tribal DDB and Rapp Collins, and a need to be smaller and leaner.”

The development comes with new DDB Hong Kong CEO Richard Thomas set to take charge on 1 April.
