CONNECTIONS: Tom.com firm to build broadband service in China

SHANGHAI: Internet portal Tom.com subsidiary Shanghai Maya Online Broadband Network has launched broadband television services targeting the China market.

The company is optimistic that China Interactive TV, which will initially reach 300,000 households in the mainland, will be accessed by some 200 million viewers within three years.

Shanghai Maya developed the broadband TV project with Inter-Continental Publishing, with support from China State Council Information Office and the Broadcasting and Film Bureau.

The company worked with internet service providers, including China Telecom, China Netcom and Great Wall Broadband for the launch of China Interactive TV.

The service offers nine channels, including news, police affairs, financial news, military, travel, entertainment, China today, online games and an English-language channel.

Shanghai Maya has also set up a website at www.cnitc.com to support its new service.

In a separate development, Shanghai Maya will act as the advertising agent for China Police Report, a programme commissioned by the Ministry of Public Service and broadcast on 130 channels across China. The programme will be broadcast on China Central television daily by June.
