CONNECTIONS: Online Journal pumps in $28m for site upgrade

The Wall Street Journal has revamped its website, www.wsj.com, spending US$28 million on the upgrade.

Scott Shulman, president of consumer electronic publishing, Dow Jones, said: "At a time when media companies are pulling back from their online investments and just now developing pay-for-content models, we are pushing forward with an aggressive investment in the Online Journal."

The launch comes just days after the Journal introduced a Chinese language service. The Journal claims its English language site is one of the largest subscription-based websites with 626,000 subscribers.

Separately, the South China Morning Post will start charging for its online content from February 19. The service will be rebranded as scmp.com Premium View. Subscribers will be charged HK$249 (US$32) per year, while Hong Kong residents subscribing to the print edition will receive complimentary access.
