CONNECTIONS: Beacon recruits Organic chief as new digital head

TOKYO: Beacon Communications, the Leo Burnett, D'Arcy and Dentsu agency group in Tokyo, has appointed Russel Cheng as director of digital services.

Cheng, who takes over from Fergus Kibble, has been a key figure in the internet marketing sector in Tokyo.

According to the agency, Kibble has quit the industry, and will move to Australia to pursue a career in law.

He created some of the earliest award-winning multilingual websites and online marketing campaigns in Asia for global brands such as Nokia, Compaq, Visa, General Motors, Heineken and Pepsi.

Prior to joining Beacon, Cheng was Singapore managing director at Organic, an internet services firm headquartered in San Francisco, the US, and which he helped launch in the Asian region in 1999.

Before joining Organic, Cheng co-founded XM Asia, a subsidiary of Bates Advertising, which is now called CCG.XM.

The company was one of the first internet marketing agencies set up in Asia-Pacific, which launched in Tokyo in 1995 to service Nokia's Asia-Pacific and Japan business for Bates.
