Coke invests in drama series for China summer splash

Coca-Cola has roped in six Asian celebrities for a mini-series drama - its biggest television investment in China. The drama-style TV campaign touches on the passions of Chinese teens and young adults, including music, sports, gaming, friendship and romance, much like US sitcom Friends.

On air throughout the summer, each episode features the company's flagship brand Coca-Cola with a story based around three girls -- stars of Taiwanese pop group FHE -- and three boys, including local celebrities Shaun Yu, Zliu Xiang and Will Pan, who move in next door to each other.

According to Willy Arcilla, CSD director of marketing, Coca-Cola China, the creative was built on 'Yao shuang you zhi ji!' ('Get refreshed your own way'), developed on the insight that Chinese youth are individuals and "derive a greater sense of fulfillment by going their own way".

"The tagline captures the rich dual meaning of the Chinese word for refreshment, shuang -- the physical refreshment from drinking an ice-cold Coke and the emotional exhilaration of achieving one's goals," added Arcilla.

The campaign will air across national, provincial and city TV channels, as well as the internet. Developed by McCann Erickson, it also includes wireless marketing, public relations, packaging, POS, displays, out-of-home advertising.
