Coach reviews media in Japan

TOKYO - Five agencies, including incumbent Dentsu, Hakuhodo, Universal McCann and ADK, are believed to be vying for US luxury accessory brand Coach's media business in Japan.

While the motivation for the review is unclear, a source indicated that the company was exploring alternative options after a long-standing relationship with Dentsu. Although Coach splits its media business by market, its global creative account is handled in New York.

Coach has been active in Japan since 1988, when it established a distribution agreement with Mitsukoshi, a leading Japanese department store. It stepped up its operations in the market in 2001 through a joint venture with Sumitomo Corporation to broaden distribution channels, proceeding in 2005 to acquire Sumitomo’s 50 per cent stake and establish Coach Japan as a wholly-owned subsidiary.
