Dentsu (the incumbent), Hakuhodo, Asatsu-DK and Universal McCann are believed to be among five agencies competing for the account. A source indicated that Coach was exploring alternative options after a long-standing relationship with Dentsu.
Although Coach splits its media business by market, its global creative account is operated from New York.
The company has been active in Japan since 1988, when it established a distribution agreement with Mitsukoshi, a Japanese department store.
A venture with Sumitomo Corporation in 2001 enabled the firm to broaden distribution with the establishment of individual stores. The acquisition of Sumitomo’s 50 per cent stake in 2005 saw Coach Japan become a wholly owned subsidiary.
Coach competes with the likes of Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Hermes and Prada in Japan.
