CNN to overhaul its digital offerings

GLOBAL - CNN will overhaul its worldwide digital offerings in October in an effort to stay relevant through the proliferation of wireless gadgets, beginning with the launch of its first iPhone application and including a relaunch of its CNN.com homepage.

According to Ringo Chan, Asia-Pacific vice-president of wireless, interactive content development and distribution at CNN International, CNN’s iPhone application was made available in the US yesterday, and CNN will develop a localised app in Asia-Pacific in the coming months.

The app will include local news and weather updates, depending on the user's location at any given time, and will include space for advertisers. It will further allow citizen journalists to upload their own video reports and feature software to edit their videos.

The app’s launch comes days after CNN launched travel and lifestyle portal CNNGo, and precedes a larger site revamp.

According to a spokeswoman for CNN, the revamp is being classified as a 're-release', just as a company like Apple would release new versions of its gadgets.

Additionally, Chan said that CNN had inked partnerships with mobile companies, such as Nokia, to develop applications for their smartphones.
