‘CNN30: Were you there?’ invites the world to submit personal photos, memories and videos documenting their experience of iconic news events from last three decades via CNN’s user-generated news community iReport.
Katherine Green, senior VP of programming at CNN International, said the idea behind the project is uncover before seen footage hidden in people's attics and cellars, telling the story from a personal point of view.
"Our hope is that this ambitious project of marrying personal snapshots and original news footage will shine a new light on the moments that changed our lives as well as our world,” added Lila King, participation director at CNN.com.
CNN has selected a set of historic events for each region. For Asia, this includes the 1997 Hong Kong handover, the 2004 Asia tsunami and the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.
The result will be an interactive timeline that registers global events and the people that experienced it firsthand. The best submissions will be featured in a half hour special programme aired on 23 October at 8:30pm (Hong Kong time).
The project is also accessible through the CNN international iPhone app and available on Twitter and Facebook.
