Chinese digital media revenues surge

HONG KONG - According to a report released by research firm KPMG, revenues from digital media in China will reach US$37.8 million in 2009, up from US$25 million in 2007.

The roundup of China’s digital landscape shows that internet-based revenue is growing fast, with 2008 expected to show 65 per cent revenue growth from 2007. For 2009 growth is forecast at 40 per cent.
According to the report, the volume of internet advertising is RMB 10 billion (US$1.46 billion), which is less than three per cent of China’s total advertising industry’s annual spend.

However, sectors to watch in China include the online gaming and the digital TV market.

In June 2008, China claimed 253 million internet users and maintained its position as the globe’s largest internet population. This was up by 91 million from same time in 2007, a more than 56 per cent increase of 56.2 percent.

By 2007, China had 26.9 million digital TV subscribers, a 155 per cent increase from 2005. This figure is projected to increase to 36.2 million subscribers in 2008, with Guangdon, Jiangsu and Guangxi as the industry’s top three markets.

China’s internet industries are poised to expand as internet penetration grows from its current level of 19 per cent.
