China Telecom hands media buying and planning to Starcom

BEIJING - Starcom Bejing has won the national media planning and buying account for China Telecom, replacing incumbent MindShare, following a two-week pitch.

The Group M agency is thought to have retained the provincial TV business. Expected billings are approximately Rmb 150 million (US$21million).

China Telecom is one of the four major telcos on the mainland, together with CNC, China Unicom and China Mobile. Of the four, China Telecom and China Mobile are the two strongest outfits, despite the fact that China mobile exclusively focuses on the mobile market. Starcom will begin working on the account on March 1st, and the partnership is expected to last until the end of 2009.

“The client was looking for an agency with a full reach of capabilities and which had good relationships with the media owners,” said Maisie He, group business director at Starcom Bejing.
