China Mobile selects IPG for global assignment

BEIJING - China Mobile, the world's largest cellphone operator by market value, has selected Interpublic Group, led by Lowe Worldwide, to handle marketing communications for its emerging markets business.

The decision comes after a pitch that also included Ogilvy & Mather, Saatchi & Saatchi and Dentsu, for a brief focusing on the mobile giant’s Pakistan business. It is thought that the brief served as a test case for communications that will be extended beyond China Mobile’s Paktel brand, as the company continues its acquisition strategy in emerging markets.

Currently the company is also present in Hong Kong, but is believed to be considering further acquisitions in Africa and Asia.
