China firm launches hi-tech brand

BEIJING: A mainland Chinese company is developing a new hi-tech brand, spearheading the launch with a hand-held device, which combines PDA, computer and mobile telephone functions.

Dopod Communications Corporation's technological innovations on the 686 model are matched only by the partners it has secured for the project.

Among them are China Electronics Corporation, China Mobile, Microsoft and Intel. Priced at RMB7,888 (US$960) each, the product is aimed at the high end market.

Charles Yang, dopod Communications Corp president, said: "Our target includes top business people and professionals. Even young people, late teens to mid-30s, because they are into hi-tech, fashionable devices."

He claimed dopod would open a new data-centric, mobile telecommunications category in China. "Mobile phone brands such as Nokia and Motorola are voice-centric but we believe that demand for data-centric services will be much bigger. It's just a matter of time," he said.

An internet and print advertising campaign is running in 11 coastal provinces and cities to drive sales. Yang also plans to export his brand to Asia and the West.

FutureBrand Hong Kong helped to develop dopod's brand strategy and expression system, including name, identity and visual applications.
