China claims 240 million online video users

BEIJING - The number of Chinese netizens watching online videos reached 240 million by the end of 2009 according to the China Internet Network Information Center's (CNNIC) latest report.

This figure is up from the end of 2008, when the CNNIC reported that China had 222 million online video users.

According to local reports, CNNIC found that nearly 67 per cent of those polled said they spent less time watching television, and nearly 24 per cent said they barely watch TV anymore.

Overall, 57 per cent said they rely more on the internet than TV, and 48 per cent said they watched online video every day.

On video sites, surveyed participants further said that movies and TV shows are what they spend the most time watching, and they regularly use search engines to find content, and 63 per cent were not opposed to advertising on their video.

China currently has more than 380 million internet users, which is approximately 28 per cent of its total population.
