China awards 3G licences

BEIJING - The Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has awarded China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom licences for the country's TD-SCDMA, CDMA 2000 and WCDMA 3G standards, respectively.

The decision allows the telecom companies to market 3G handsets and launch products for the standards for the first time in China.

The TD-SCDMA network was developed in part by China Mobile and will be used by the operator. Meanwhile, China Telecom will gain the rights for the CDMA 2000 network – which is popular in the US - and China Unicom will operate on WCDMA, which is widely used in Europe.

The permits follow tests conducted by China Mobile in April in eight cities across China for its TD-SCDMA standard prior to the Beijing Olympics
