Chaturvedi is P&G's first Asian chief

Ravi Chaturvedi has become the first Asian president at Procter & Gamble, taking charge of the FMCG giant's Northeast Asia operations.

Chaturvedi, who has spent more than two decades with P&G, will be based in Japan and replaces Werner Geissler, who has moved to a new assignment. His appointment is part of a company-wide reorganisation that has seen P&G split its health and beauty care divisions in Greater China and appoint four vice-chairmen to handle key business units. Former GM for fabric and homecare and feminine business in Greater China, Austin Lally, who takes over Chaturvedi's previous duties as GM for beauty care in Greater China, said: "(Chaturvedi's appointment) is a recognition of his talent and important symbolically to the company and to its Asian managers." Chaturvedi joined P&G in 1983 as a sales trainee in India. He has since held various management roles at the company in the Philippines, Thailand, North America, India and Greater China. Former beauty and skincare marketing director, Stevie Wong, has been promoted to GM and will take over Lally's duties. "She is the first homegrown China GM and is a sign that we are building a strong local organisation. Today, less than 20 per cent of our marketing directors are from outside Asia," said Lally.
